Chargewise privacy policy
Chargewise is a browser extension that keeps a list of your subscriptions and free trials and reminds you before you are charged. This page explains exactly what it reads, where that information goes, and how to delete it.
In short: Chargewise only reads pages that are about prices, plans, trials, billing or cancellation. It never reads passwords, card numbers or anything you type into forms. Your data is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used for anything other than tracking your subscriptions.
What Chargewise reads, and when
Nothing is read until you choose Turn on detection on the welcome screen. After that:
- Visible page text of pages that mention prices, plans, free trials, billing or cancellation. It is captured at the moments that matter: when the page opens, when you click a subscribe, pay or cancel button, when a confirmation appears, and when you leave the page. Pages without these signals are ignored and nothing from them is kept.
- Billing details the page itself receives from its payment provider (for example plan name, price, billing period, renewal date). Card details, tokens, payment methods and similar fields are removed before anything is stored.
- The address and title of those pages.
Chargewise never reads the values you type into forms (including passwords and card fields), never reads card-entry frames from payment providers, and removes any number that looks like a card number from captured text. It does not read your email, your bank accounts or your browsing history.
What happens to it
| Information | Where it goes | How long it is kept |
|---|---|---|
| Captured page text from a sign-up, billing or cancellation | Stored in your browser. If you are signed in, it is sent over an encrypted connection to the Chargewise server, which passes it to Google's Gemini AI to work out the service, price and dates. The server does not store this text. | In your browser: a short working copy, cleared after analysis (the last 15 are kept to let you report mistakes). On the server: not stored. |
| Your list of subscriptions (service, price, billing period, dates, notes) | Stored in your browser. If you are signed in, also stored in your Chargewise account so it syncs between your computers. | Until you delete it or your account. |
| Your email address | Used only to sign you in with a one-time code and to identify your account. | Until you delete your account. |
| Correction reports (only if you switch on "Help improve Chargewise") | Your Chargewise account database, readable only by the Chargewise team. | Until they are no longer needed to fix the mistake, at most 12 months, or until you delete your account. |
| Number of AI checks per day | Your account, to apply the daily limit. | Until you delete your account. |
If you don't sign in, everything stays in your browser and the built-in rules are used instead of AI.
Help improve Chargewise (optional)
This is off unless you switch it on, on the welcome screen or in Settings → Detection. When it is on and you change something Chargewise detected (fix a price or date, answer "Yes, keep it", delete it), or add by hand a subscription on a site Chargewise saw in the last two weeks, a report is sent to the Chargewise team containing:
- what Chargewise had saved and what you changed it to;
- the page text Chargewise captured on that site at the time (with card-like numbers already removed, and never anything you typed into forms);
- the version of the extension.
Reports are used only to fix detection mistakes. They are stored in the Chargewise account database, can be read only by the Chargewise team, and are deleted with your account. Subscriptions you added yourself are never reported. Settings → Detection → "What gets sent" lists every report sent from your browser.
Bank statement import
If you choose to import subscriptions from a bank or card statement (a PDF, CSV, screenshot or pasted text):
- PDF statements are opened in your browser and only their text is sent. Card numbers (including masked ones like 1234 56XX XXXX 7890), IBANs and long account numbers are removed in your browser first. The same applies to CSV files and pasted text. Screenshots, and PDFs that contain only pictures of pages, are sent as images, so you may crop out anything you don't want to share.
- Password-protected statements are unlocked in your browser. The password is never sent to us or anyone else, and never saved.
- The statement is sent once, over an encrypted connection, to the Chargewise server, which passes it to Google's Gemini AI to find recurring charges and returns the list to you.
- The statement is not stored: not in your browser, not in your Chargewise account and not on our server. It is deleted as soon as the scan finishes.
- Only the subscriptions you tick and add (service, price, billing period, dates and the short merchant description) are kept, like any other subscription in your list.
Logos
To show a service's logo, Chargewise first uses the icon of that website as your browser already shows it: when you visit a site you have a subscription with, its icon is saved in your browser (it is not sent anywhere or synced), and Chrome's own icon cache is used for sites you've visited before. If neither has it, the icon is loaded from DuckDuckGo's icon service (icons.duckduckgo.com); only the website name (for example netflix.com) is sent, nothing about you.
Who processes it
- Supabase hosts the Chargewise account database and server (region: Mumbai, India).
- Google (Gemini API) analyses captured page text on our behalf. We use the paid Gemini API, under which Google does not use the content to improve its products.
We do not share your information with anyone else, and we do not sell it.
Limited use
The use of information received from the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Your information is used only to provide Chargewise's single purpose (tracking your subscriptions and reminding you before charges). It is not used for advertising, not used to determine credit-worthiness or for lending, and not read by people except when you ask us for help with a specific problem.
Your choices
- Turn detection off: Settings → Detection. You can still add subscriptions yourself.
- Delete your data: Settings → Your data → Delete all data on this computer. If you are signed in, this also deletes the list from your account.
- Delete your account: email support@trychargewise.com from the address you signed in with and we will delete your account and everything in it within 30 days.
- Export: Settings → Your data → Export gives you a copy of your list.
- Remove the extension at any time from chrome://extensions; this removes all data stored in your browser.
Children
Chargewise is not intended for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what Chargewise reads or where it goes, the extension will show the change and ask you again before continuing.
